April 8, 2012 Central Market and the Textile Museum

We awoke to the exciting news that our son his now engaged to a very special woman. What a wonderful way to start Easter Day here in Kuala Lumpur! With the time change we realized if we wanted to talk to him we would need to find a cafe with wifi around 11 am so we could catch him before he went to work. We headed out to Central Market.

Central Market was founded in 1888 and originally used as a wet market, selling fruits, vegetables, fish etc with water everywhere to rinse and wash the products on sale. The lovely art decor building was completed in 1937. The products sold represent the ethnic diversity of the country with goods mostly from India, China and Malaysia being sold. We checked out the area and had a good Skype call with Jonathan and organized a call with both him and Kat for the evening. We had a quick lunch in the food court on the third floor of the Central Market.

We next went to the small but very well done National Textile Museum. The textile museum has a cafe that allows children and adults to try their hand at batik painting.  We had bought a kit for one of our little friends in Central Market but children could also do the craft here after seeing all the lovely textiles of the various  types.  The museum has many excellent short videos describing the different textile weaving, printing, embroidery processes. Only one of us had interest in seeing all of them but we did get through 50% at least.

Dinner was again at Alor market but this time we got caught in a quick thunderstorm so that made for an interesting evening and great people-watching.
