A brief outline of our week in Myanmar (formerly Burma) follows, as we had no decent access to the internet while we were there, and we have now safely arrived back in Chiang Mai.
Sunday May 16 we caught an Air Bagan flight to Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) and were met by a guide with a car and driver. (Cars there are old Japanese cars with the steering wheel on the right, but Myanmar shifted to driving on the right hand side of the road some 30 years ago, but still have the steering on the wrong side.) We spent the 17th and 18th in the old capital of Bagan with 3,000 temples, then the 19th, 20th, and 21st in Mandalay, the second largest city and entrepot city for trade with India and China. The 22nd and 23rd we were back in Yangon.
Arriving back in Thailand, we discovered that Chiang Mai, like much of Thailand, is under special military emergency rule, with a curfew that is now only from 11PM to 4AM, and various rules against major public gatherings or inciting violence. Apparently the Governor's Office a few blocks down was set on fire while we were out.But today all is quiet, and there is hope the curfew will be lifted after tomorrow night.
